We’re in the heart of Hanoi, a stone’s throw from the Opera House, and we’ve just been let in on a secret: there’s a bar within a bar inside Capella Hanoi’s gilded rooftop rendezvous, The Hudson Rooms. It’s named after a clandestine New York train platform that once shuttled presidents and generals. And this exclusive sanctuary is more than just a bar. Track 61 is a portal to another time, another place – a fever dream of 1920s opulence where the spirits flow as freely as the conversation.

Capella Hanoi, imagined by the architect Bill Bensley, captures the essence of opera’s golden age. A short distance from the iconic Hanoi Opera House, this coveted retreat reimagines what could have been the ultimate gathering place for opera’s greatest artists, singers, composers, and designers after the final curtain call.
There are only 47 rooms. Each thematic suite is a curated collection of original memorabilia from opera’s glorious era created in tribute to an individual from the time. Offering leafy views and access to Hoan Kiem Lake, epicurean delights crafted by culinary artisans, and a series of daily rituals and programming that unveil Hanoi’s hidden treasures, Capella Hanoi is a spellbindingly elegant step back in time.
Perched atop Capella Hanoi’s opera-inspired elegance, The Hudson Rooms is the dreamy confluence of two worlds. Where Capella’s floors below resonate with the echoes of its imagined cultural symphony, this crowning jewel transports guests to the intoxicating glamor of 1920s New York, a golden age of refinement and charm.
Hidden from prying eyes, a bar within a bar, lies the exclusive, invite-only speakeasy Track 61. Here, connoisseurs can imbibe some of the world’s rarest whiskies and enjoy premium cigars in an atmosphere of secrecy.
A High Altitude Haven
At the helm of this high-altitude haven is Khanh, usually known as Patrick, a bartender whose journey to mixology was as unexpected as it was destined. “I settled as a bartender because I believe we have one of the most privileges of all: the chance to take care of others and make them feel welcome,” he muses.
Most nights, Bar Manager Sean Halse busies himself dispensing oyster luges at the Hudson Rooms bar, while Patrick watches out for guests deserving of an invitation into Track 61.
Once inside Track 61, having squeezed out a welcome drink from a leather pouch – a rum concoction that’s a prelude to the vicarious cocktail adventure ahead – Patrick introduces the shelves full of exclusive spirits like lifelong friends, proudly opens a box of cigars before gesturing to the smoking jacket on a hanger that you get to where while you smoke, and begins explaining what makes Track 61 so special – if that wasn’t already obvious..
Track 61, he explains, is named after the fabled secret train platform in New York that once ferried presidents and generals, which makes it more than just a bar — it’s more like a time machine.
Limited to just 16 seats, Track 61 boasts a whiskey collection that would make even the most seasoned connoisseur weak at the knees. From 20-year-old drams to a Macallan from 1950 that commands $12,000 for a single shot, Track 61 is a testament to the art of fine spirits.
But it’s not just about the libations. As Patrick puts it, “We offer that velvet smoking jacket to guests when they indulge in some of our quality tobacco. And our cocktail program features classic twists and signature drinks inspired by great explorers like Ferdinand Magellan and Marco Polo.”
The Track 61 Ticketing System: Intuition Over A Strict Criteria
The exclusivity of Track 61 is maintained through that ticketing system that’s more about intuition than strict criteria. “Everyone deserves to see the best of us,” Patrick says, “I usually just use the bartender senses I’ve honed over the years to identify who should be appropriate ticket holders.”
One of the most intriguing aspects of Track 61 is its secret entrance, hidden behind lockers that pay homage to famous explorers. “I think my favorite is the David Livingstone locker. I love his working-class ‘rags-to-riches’ inspirational story.”
The no-phones policy at the entrance adds to the allure. “We want to secure the surprising and delightful moment when our guests first discover the secret entrance,” Patrick explains. “A speakeasy won’t be a speakeasy if everybody knows where and how the entrance is.”
But what truly sets The Hudson Rooms and Track 61 apart is their commitment to hospitality. “We use our concepts and stories as a tool: an ice-breaker,” Patrick says. “From that point, we let our staff’s personality shine freely. We treat everyone as an individual, with love and respect, serving with all our abilities.”
Elements Crafted To Create An Unforgettable Experience
From the oyster luge experience — a nod to New York’s oyster-laden past — to the signature Track 61 Martini, every element is carefully crafted to create an unforgettable experience. The cocktail menu, inspired by famous explorers and their journeys, changes every 3-6 months, ensuring there’s always something new to discover.
As the night deepens and the smoke from fine cigars curls towards the ceiling, Track 61 reveals its true magic. “What I love is the special atmosphere we create, where time feels slower,” Patrick reflects. “We can communicate at a personal level, share stories, and truly be in the moment.”
In a world that often moves too fast, Track 61 stands as a testament to the enduring allure of mystery, luxury, and the simple pleasure of a perfectly crafted drink shared with good company. It’s not just a bar. It’s a journey, an experience, a secret waiting to be discovered by those fortunate enough to find their way to this hidden track above Hanoi’s bustling streets.
